How to measure a control cable for replacement?

How to measure a control cable for replacement?

At Industrial and Cable Group we are often approached about replacement of control cables and how to accurately measure it and or find something that will fit a specific application.

The first thing to check for is a part number – some cables have it heat stamped on the outer / conduit of the cable.   It may have also have a brand name printed on it, for example - Morse or Teleflex.  If you know this then we can more than likely can help you with finding a replacement.

If you can’t find this then the answer is to look at the cable you’re replacing; measure it from tip to tip, then take note of what type of cable ends it has eg Bulkhead or Clamp (threaded or grooved).  Most cable types are measured tip to tip but there are some exceptions to this rule.

The other pieces of information you will need is an understanding of the Cable Series you’re replacing that corresponds to the size of the rods it has.  For example, 30 Series has 3/16” Rod, 40 Series – 1/4” Rod and 60 Series – 5/16” Rod.  Our 40 Series can also come with metric rods at 6mm and 60 Series with metric 8mm rods.  Other control cables may have differing identifying factors.

The next step is knowing what length of travel you need – our standard options offer between 25mm through to 150mm.

In summary the pieces of information you need are:

  • What Ends?
  • What Travel?
  • What Length?
  • Does it have a part number or brand?

Of course, it you can’t find what you’re looking for on our site then we suggest taking photos of your old cable and sending them to us so we can offer some assistance.  Use our CONTACT US FORM or email to sales@industrialandcable.com.au

What is a Twist Lock Industrial Cable and What Do They Do?

A Twist Lock Cable is a type of control cable used when an application requires the ability to “lock” in an exact position.  They are a member of the push pull cable family.

Twist Lock Cables by Industrial & Cable Groupallow designed settings to be made and held regardless of vibration.  They are easily locked in by a slight term in either direction.  These cables are ideal for RPM settings on mobile air compressors and similar applications where vibration is severe.

Specifications

  • Cable Rod: 10-32 UNF
  • End Type: Threaded or Grooved (Clamp or Bulkhead)
  • Travel: 50mm or 75mm

Whatever your requirements, we can build Twist Lock Cables to any length you need – shop from our online options or CONTACT US to create a bespoke cable. Our team at Industrial and Cable Group is ready to help.

What Are RVC Cables and How They Improve Agricultural & Plant Equipment Operations

Remote Valve Control (RVC) Cables are essential components in modern machinery, enabling precise valve actuation across agricultural, construction, and industrial equipment.  By transmitting force or mechanical signals, RVC cables allow operators to control valves remotely, improving efficiency, safety, and accessibility in systems like hydraulic and pneumatic machinery.

At Industrial & Cable Group, we specialise in high-quality RVC cables engineered for heavy machinery, agricultural equipment, and plant maintenance, ensuring reliable operation in tough environments.

What Are RVC Cables?

RVC (Remote Valve Control) Cables are mechanical linkages that transmit motion from a control system to valves, such as ball, butterfly, or other flow control valves. Commonly known as push-pull cables, they connect motorised actuators to remote control points, enabling:

o   Remote operation of valves from a safe distance

o   Automation of irrigation, fluid, or chemical systems

o   Precise flow control in hydraulic or pneumatic applications

o   These cables are widely used in agricultural equipment, plant machinery, and heavy vehicles, making maintenance and operation safer and more efficient.

Types of RVC Cable-Actuated Systems

o   Mechanical RVC Cables (Push-Pull / Bowden Cables)

o   Mechanical cables are a reliable, manual solution for remote valve control. They are ideal for:

o   Tractors, harvesters, and irrigation systems

o   Plant machinery like loaders, excavators, and sprayers

o   Marine equipment and small machinery

o   Mechanical cables transmit direct motion without electricity, ensuring consistent valve operation even in harsh or remote environments.

Industrial & Cable Group RVC Cable Types

We provide a range of RVC cables suitable for agricultural, industrial, and plant machinery applications:

o  RVC Bulkhead Hub

Applications of RVC Cables in Agriculture & Plant Equipment

RVC cables are crucial in modern farming, plant machinery, and heavy vehicle operations:

o   Automated irrigation systems – control water flow remotely for crops

o   Fertilizer and pesticide application – precise chemical delivery

o   Greenhouse climate control – regulate valves for humidity and temperature

o   Livestock water and feed systems – remote monitoring and adjustment

o   Heavy machinery hydraulics – reliable control in construction and earthmoving vehicles

By using RVC cables, operators can increase efficiency, optimise resources, and improve safety across all agricultural and industrial operations.

Understanding Push-Pull Control Cables: Types, Applications & Industries

Understanding Push-Pull Control Cables: Types, Applications & Industries

Control cables can be broken down into different types but essentially there are push-pull cables, pull ONLY cables, Micro Adjust cables and twist lock cables.

Industrial & Cable Group assemble all these cables in our Sydney factory, ready for quick shipping across Australia and New Zealand.

Push-Pull cables operate by the cable inner moving through a housing and moving the force from one end to the other of the cable.  They are straight forward, precise and relatively easy to install. These are the most common type of control cable, but they are not suitable as rotating style cables.

Pull ONLY cables operate in a similar method to the Push Pull cable but have no sleeves at each end to resist the compression force of a Push Pull cable.  They can manage force in a Pull ONLY direction.

Micro Adjust cables also known as Vernier Cables are a variation on the Push Pull cable where the operation is controlled by the Micro Adjustment at the Load input end of the cable.  These cables are used primarily for operating fixed throttles and levers that require a precise adjustment through the operation of the cable travel.  The cables can also be a set and forget due to the operation of the Micro adjustable operating head.  The cables only operate through light output loads.

Twist Lock cables are another variation on the Push Pull cable and here the operation is set by twisting the operating head through 90 degrees; setting the amount of movement required and then twisting the head back 90 degrees to lock in a fixed position until the operator chooses to make an adjustment.  The cables only operate through light output loads.

Common Applications and Industries

Mechanical control cables are used across a wide range of industries and equipment types, including:

  • Mining equipment and machinery
  • Agricultural tractors and harvesters
  • Trucks, buses, and waste management vehicles
  • Excavation and concreting machinery
  • Generators and fixed plant equipment
  • Earthmoving and construction equipment
  • Industrial machinery requiring precise control

No matter the industry, selecting the correct cable ensures reliability, safety, and efficient operation.
